Garland Pawsibilities Shelter

Stay tuned here for the latest updates on the progress of a NEW Adoption Center for the City of Garland to be operated by Garland Pawsibilities.

Location:
3136 South Shiloh Road Garland, TX

Below is an excerpt from the initial press release:

GARLAND, Texas – December 10, 2010 – The City of Garland is implementing an expansion and improvement of its humane animal services policies.  Garland Animal Services has created a new partnership with Garland Pawsibilities, a local nonprofit group dedicated to finding good homes for adoptable animals, to open a new Pet Adoption Center.  The center will be located at 3136 South Shiloh Road Garland, TX  (a former fire station).

“Having Garland Pawsibilities and its volunteers partnering with us to further increase pet adoptions is invaluable,” said William Dollar, Garland’s City Manager.  “Their passion and dedication will help further the successful efforts of the Garland Animal Shelter.  I can think of no better use for an idle city facility than making it into a place for families to find a new pet.”

Adrianne Erwin, spokesperson for Garland Pawsibilities said, “We hold a number of adoption events around Garland every year.  This new facility gives us an easy to find location to host additional events, as well as helps in our fundraising efforts.  We believe the new center will greatly enhance our efforts to place animals in loving homes.”

Although animal placements at the Garland Animal Shelter increased 30% this year, the City continues to stress that spaying and neutering pets is the most effective way to reduce the number of animals that come into the Animal Shelter every year.  Planned outreach events in 2012 are intended to increase awareness on this issue.

What happens next?

We are in the infancy of this project, but everyone (City & Garland Pawsibilities) recognizes that getting this new shelter up and running is a priority to happen as quickly as possible.

Update 1/24/12:  Cobalt Roofing has agreed to repair our firehouse roof for free since our other patches haven't held.  I can't tell you how excited we were to get that post-Christmas news.  They've made one patch over the kitchen area where the roof is the worst and plan to make a few more visits to knock out all the leaks.  The building committee has been formed and met for the first time repainting the parking lots stripes, working on a broken glass window in the truck bay, cleaned out the utility and electrical closets and tested a new floor solvent to remove the sticky in the bonding rooms.

Update 12/10/11: We are currently in the process of working on the marble floors.  Some of the originally flooring has been cleaned and restored; we still have our bonding rooms to go.  We are currently looking for donations to repair the leaking roof.  Patching is underway as we speak.  A/C is being worked on for the fire truck bay and we are looking for carpet squares to put in the ambulance bay for the cat room.  The group is working with an architect to work out the kennels for the dogs.  We want to make sure every dog has plenty of room, but we get the maximum number of kennels in.

Update 10/20/11:  GPaws and teamed up with TCAP to offer low cost spay and neuter at the firehouse.  Even though the firehouse is not up and running to house animals we were able to open our clinic ahead of the 2012 schedule.

Update 6/20/11: The inside of the building has been painted courtesy of Sherwin Williams and their wonderful employees.

Update 5/24/11: The building has been cleaned and we are in need of public donations in order to build the necessary kennels and purchase equipment and supplies for the Shelter. Fund raising events have been completed and continue to raise funds. Please become a monthly supporter by making your tax deductible donations (see donations page).

Update 2/2011: The building lease has been signed and we are in possession of the building now. The City is making some needed repairs and we are gathering basic furniture and equipment at this time. Funds are needed to install and purchase kennel runs for the dogs and kennells for the smaller dogs/cats and for continued operating costs such as pet food, sanitation products, and general operating supplies, phone and internet connections.

As we complete each of the necessary steps toward our opening day..we'll keep you updated on this web page.
